In a significant step towards cultural unity and historical relevance, Charminar has been chosen as the symbolic venue for the 2025 Bibi ka Alam procession. This decision received the endorsement of Nawab Raunaq Yar Khan, who is recognized by the royal Asaf Jahi family as the IX Nizam of Hyderabad.
The choice of Charminar was made in coordination with the Shia Council, which deemed it the most appropriate and representative site for the procession. This historic structure, built by the secular Qutb Shahi dynasty, not only marks the founding of Hyderabad but also incorporates Shia architectural motifs, reinforcing its deep-rooted spiritual symbolism and plural legacy. Once associated with royal exclusivity, Charminar has now been repositioned as a space accessible to all, reflecting the city’s timeless spiritual heritage.
Nawab Raunaq Yar Khan has expressed his commitment to integrating his extended royal family into the fabric of modern democratic India. He emphasized his priorities, which include representing and securing justice for royal descendants under Indian law. He also asserted that traditions from the Nizam era must evolve to resonate with contemporary aspirations and values of inclusivity.
The Bibi ka Alam procession, one of the city’s largest and most revered Muslim gatherings, traces its origins to the Qutb Shahi rulers, who practiced Shia Islam. Although the Nizams followed a different school within Islam, they were known for their secular approach and deep respect for the Alam. Notably, Mir Osman Ali Khan, the last Nizam, revered the procession and contributed priceless jewels that are now part of the sacred relic. However, his personal preferences regarding venues and traditions are considered less relevant in today’s inclusive context.
The 2025 procession is viewed as a new chapter in the city’s cultural narrative, with Nawab Raunaq Yar Khan receiving support from numerous royal descendants of H.E.H. Osman Ali Khan and earlier Nizams. Their numbers reportedly continue to grow, further strengthening his progressive initiatives. The Shia Civil Council for Social Justice has also agreed to follow Nawab Raunaq’s guidance, acknowledging his leadership role in evolving traditions respectfully. Political parties across the spectrum are expected to support some of Nawab’s efforts, particularly those aimed at preserving cultural identity while promoting social harmony.
