Mir Mohammed Azmath Ali Khan, popularly known as Azmat Jah, has been declared as the IX head of the Asaf Jahi Dynasty. The ceremony was held at the Coronation Hall of the Chowmahalla Palace, marking the continuation of a dynasty that has existed for 299 years.
Following the demise of Prince MukarramJah Mir Barkat Ali Khan, his son, Azmat Jah, will succeed as the IX head of the Asaf Jahi dynasty. He will take over the Nizam Trusts at his father’s request. However, due to the Indian government abolishing the title in 1971, Azmat Jah, aged 63, will not be granted the title of Nizam IX.
Azmat Jah, a professional photographer and cinematographer, received his education in London and California. He has reportedly worked with renowned figures such as Steven Spielberg and Richard Attenborough. Azmat Jah was born to Mukarram Jah’s first wife, Princess Esra, on July 23, 1960, and was named the heir apparent by the Seventh Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan, who was still alive at the time.
The last Nizam of Hyderabad, Mukarram Jah, passed away in Turkey and was laid to rest in the family’s vault in the forecourt of Mecca Masjid. He was named the successor by Mir Osman Ali Khan on June 14, 1954. He was crowned at Chowmahalla Palace in 1967 and referred to as the Prince of Hyderabad in 1971. Mukarram Jah held the title of India’s richest person up until the 1980s.
