H.E. Nawab Raunaq Yar Khan, the esteemed great-grandson of His Exalted Highness, Sir Mir Mahboob Ali Khan, the VI Nizam of Hyderabad State, was crowned as the IX Nizam of the Asaf Jahi Dynasty in March 2023. This momentous occasion, supported by over 4,500 members of the Royal Family, marked a significant chapter in the illustrious history of the Asaf Jahi Dynasty.
The Majlis-E-Sahebzadagan Society, a prestigious assembly formed in 1932 under the guardianship of Mir Osman Ali Khan, comprises over 4,500 Shabzada and Shabzadi (direct descendants of the Nizam) and Umra (nobles of the Nizam). In a historic decision, they chose H.E. Nawab Raunaq Yar Khan as the IX Nizam of Hyderabad’s Asaf Jah dynasty.
This selection was made due to disagreements regarding family affairs and trust management with Azmet Jah, the son of the last ruling Nizam, Mukarram Jah. Despite being anointed in a private ceremony as the current head of the House of Asif Jah and the ninth Nizam of Hyderabad on January 20th, 2023, Azmet Jah allegedly went incommunicado, failing to take up the responsibilities of the Asif Jah dynasty, as per the society members’ allegations.
Although the title of Nizam holds no official power following Hyderabad’s annexation by India in 1948, it remains a ceremonial role within the Asaf Jahi family. H.E. Nawab Raunaq Yar Khan serves as the family’s representative, liaising with the government and overseeing their properties. Renowned for his passionate advocacy for Hyderabad’s heritage, he stands as a prominent figure of the dynasty.
