On Thursday, a significant event unfolded in the annals of the Asaf Jahi dynasty, as a section of its extended family members coronated Raunak Yar Jung as Nizam IX. This momentous occasion took place at the Azam Function Hall, nestled in the heart of the Moghalpura area of the city, a venue typically reserved for celebrations such as marriages, engagements, and birthday parties.
The hall was graced by dozens of men in sherwanis and women in traditional attire, bearing witness to the coronation of Nizam IX. Initially, the event was anticipated to transpire at Khaja Ka Chilla. However, it was ultimately held at the Azam Function Hall, which was transformed into a regal setting for the day.
“There is no territory of Nizams. Raunaq Yar Jung is a representative of the family and will liaison with the government on our behalf. We needed someone to take care of the properties. Raunaq will be doing that,”
Informed Moiz Jung of Sahebzadagan Society, shedding light on the ceremonial role of Raunak Yar Jung within the Asaf Jahi family. While the title of Nizam holds no official power following Hyderabad’s annexation by India in 1948, it remains a symbolic role within the family. Raunak Yar Jung serves as the family’s representative, liaising with the government and overseeing their properties.
His coronation as Nizam IX marks a pivotal moment in the illustrious history of the Asaf Jahi Dynasty, contesting the claims of Azmet Jah, the son of the last ruling Nizam, Mukarram Jah, due to disagreements regarding family affairs and trust management. Supported by over 4,500 members of the Royal Family, this event underscores the enduring legacy of the Asaf Jahi Dynasty and its profound influence on art, culture, and society.
Renowned for his passionate advocacy for Hyderabad’s heritage, H.E. Nawab Raunaq Yar Khan stands as a prominent figure of the dynasty. His reign promises to bridge the historical significance of the Nizams with contemporary audiences, enlightening a broad audience about their pivotal role in shaping art, culture, and society.
