Declaring Nizam IX: Azmat Jah Ascends Amidst Hyderabad Tradition

Upon the passing of the eighth titular Nizam of Hyderabad, Mukarram Jah, his eldest son, Mir Mohammad Azmat Ali Khan Azmat Jah, was formally declared as the ninth Nizam. The announcement was made in a statement from Chowmahalla Palace, the office of the Nizams, on Saturday. Mukarram Jah passed away in Istanbul, Turkey, on January 14, and his last rites were conducted with state honours in Hyderabad on January 18. As per the decree made by Mukarram Jah during his lifetime, Azmat Jah was anointed as his successor and the ninth head of the Asaf Jahi dynasty for symbolic, ceremonial, and ancillary purposes. The declaration was made in a simple ceremony attended by the family members of Mukarram Jah. However, since the Central government abolished titles in 1971, Azmat Jah will not officially hold the title of Nizam IX.
