Proclamation of H.E. Nawab Azmat Jah as Nizam IX: A Symbolic Succession in Hyderabad’s Asaf Jahi Dynasty

Upon the demise of the titular Nizam VIII, Mukarram Jah, his eldest son, Mir Mohammad Azmat Ali Khan Azmat Jah, was officially announced as the ninth Nizam of Hyderabad, as per a statement from Chowmahalla Palace. Mukarram Jah passed away in Istanbul, Turkey, on January 14, with his final rites conducted with state honors in Hyderabad on January 18. In accordance with Mukarram Jah’s desire and decree, Azmat Jah was anointed as his successor in a simple ceremony attended by family members. However, due to the Central government’s abolition of titles in 1971, Azmat Jah will not bear the title of Nizam IX.
