Dr. Aruna Naware
Dr. Aruna Naware is a distinguished medical professional and historian with a keen interest in the Asaf Jahi Nizam dynasty of Hyderabad. Born into a noble family during the era of the Nizams, Dr. Naware has successfully combined her professional career in medicine with her passion for historical research.
Dr. Naware earned her MBBS and MD from Osmania Medical College, later specializing in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She has worked extensively with the Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia and is a Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (MRCOG) in London. Since 2007, Dr. Naware has been a British citizen residing in the UK, where she practices as a Fertility Consultant in London.
Rooted in her family’s noble heritage, Dr. Naware has engaged deeply with Asaf Jahi history, particularly focusing on the successions and legacy of the dynasty. Following the passing of Mukarram Jah in 2023—the titular 8th Nizam and grandson of the last ruling Nizam—she has conducted extensive discussions with officially recognized members of Hyderabad’s royal family. These dialogues explored the family’s evolving legal, social, and democratic choices in post-independence India, where the monarchy no longer holds power or formal titles.
Dr. Naware’s months-long assessment of the prevailing circumstances and insights into the royal family’s perspectives on succession, identity, and future paths have provided invaluable contributions to the broader historical study conducted by Dr. Marcella Sirhandi. Together, they have documented the 300-year history of the Asaf Jahi dynasty, spanning from its founding by Nizam-ul-Mulk Asaf Jah I in 1724 to the political changes in 1948 and their subsequent impact in democratic India.
Through her unique access to Hyderabad’s noble circles and her thorough research, Dr. Naware has played a key role in preserving and contextualizing the history and modern legacy of the Nizam dynasty. Her contributions highlight the resilience and adaptability of Hyderabad’s royal descendants in navigating the contemporary era.
