Dr. Marcella Sirhandi
Dr. Marcella Sirhandi is a distinguished scholar in Asian Art History, specializing in South Asian art, with a strong focus on Indian and Pakistani artists. After earning her PhD in 1985 from the Ohio State University with a dissertation on Abdul Rehman Chughtai, Pakistan’s National Artist, Dr. Sirhandi has contributed significantly to the academic understanding of modern and contemporary art in South Asia. Her research on Chughtai’s pivotal commission for the Nizam of Hyderabad in 1947, highlights her meticulous historical investigations into the cultural intersections of art, partition, and royal patronage.
Dr. Sirhandi’s scholarly work extends across numerous prominent artists, including Jamini Roy, Antonio Xavier Trindade, Lubna Agha, and Mohan Samant, reflecting her comprehensive engagement with modern Indian and Pakistani painters. She has published books, exhibition catalogues, and has curated notable exhibitions on South Asian art, bringing these artists to international prominence.
As a dedicated educator, Dr. Sirhandi played a pivotal role in shaping art education, notably co-creating the Masters of Art Program at the National College of Arts in Lahore. She has also held teaching positions at the Kansas City Art Institute, University of Missouri, and Oklahoma State University, where she is now Professor Emerita in Art History.
Dr. Sirhandi’s research extends to the dynastic history of the Asaf Jahi Nizams of Hyderabad, delving into successions from the dynasty’s founding in 1724 to its political integration into democratic India in 1948 and beyond. Notably, she brings to light three additional rulers – direct progeny of the founder, who have often been omitted from conventional historical sequences. Her findings, supported by ongoing research with Dr. Aruna Naware, provide a fresh perspective on 300 years of Nizam influence, contextualizing their legacy in contemporary discourse.
Dr. Marcella Sirhandi’s contributions to art history, her rigorous scholarship, and her dedication to elevating South Asian artists and historical narratives have cemented her as a leading authority in her field.
